• Andersen's group discovered several species of golden algae that proved to belong to a completely new group of algae. This group, the Pinguiophyceae, or "oil algae", produce large amounts of "omega-3" fatty acids, an important promoter of "heart health" in humans.
  • O'Kelly's group discovered that the amoeba that caused the lobster die-off in western Long Island Sound belongs to a new group of protozoa. They also found that amoebae reported from sediments as well as from finfish (amoebic gill disease) and sea urchins (urchin wasting disease) all belong to the same species.
